Milan Glozić graduated from The College of Fine and Applied Arts in Belgrade. His pieces have been shown in multiple solo and group exhibitions in Serbia since 2003.

    Possessing an adventurous spirit and prone to experimenting, he has none the less been creating his art while using nearly all of the traditional techniques. Moreover, he uses photography, photo manipulation and digital art in his work. Themes in his artwork echo his adventurous spirit; themes in his artwork range from social and political issues, through to science fiction, symbolism and abstractions. He is known to have said that by playing and tackling different themes and materials he has discovered himself and his vision of art.

   In this exhibition you will see the series of portraits titled „In the Face Labyrinth“. Choosing to explore female portrait, Milan has tackled the question of beauty, one of the pivotal questions in art. By painting faces, he tries to discover what makes one face more beautiful than the other. It is a question which has occupied many philosophers and artists who have dealt with aesthetics ever since ancient times.  Realizing that the question of beauty raises many more and forms a labyrinth of thoughts he has adopted this form for his works and has presented it in this particular way.

Furthermore, through the female portrait the artist explores an element of art – the line. What he achieves in this is exploration are possibilities of the line and its aesthetic effect in art.

Many artists and theorists of art history have divided art pieces into basic elements of artistic expression so as to understand them and study them more carefully. Some of them claim that artists prefer giving a main direction to their compositions – horizontal, vertical, sidelong or curvy, depending on the main idea they aim to express. This line or direction is called “the dominant” and it doesn’t only carry the visual aesthetic principle but it also clears the image by guiding the beholder’s eye to the highlights of the painting.  In Milan’s pieces it isn’t simple to distinguish the dominant line due to a large number of lines intertwined, however, by carefully looking from a certain distance the eye focuses and distinguishes the leading line.

English painter, William Hogarth claimed that in art we have a single leading principle which denotes that all forms in an art piece have to follow a single line and be directed towards it. He thought that ‘the snake line’ was the most pleasing to the human eye, because it is a line of beauty and graciousness, which happens to be the line which is highly represented in Milan’s pieces. The curvy line represents the excitement of the heart, tenderness and affection.

  The concept of an artwork, regardless of the art movement they belong to, imposes certain conditions and obligations that have to be fulfilled so that the idea is expressed fully. The concept refers to the unity of the thought, depiction and technique. Otherwise, the aesthetic and artistic effect will be missing. In Milan’s work the idea and the composition represent the perfect understanding of this unity, so that harmony of his paintings remains intact.

    Another artistic value of Milan’s pieces can be found in the representation of human feelings. He has succeeded in representing human soul through feelings depicted in the faces in his portraits which makes his artwork wholesome and gives it the quality of humanism.
