Le Tour de France - Excitement! Artist’s Statement:
I love to watch Le Tour de France every year. I am captured by the colour, the energy, the beautiful country-side with its summer warmth. But most of all, I admire the riders who tackle such impossible feats of endurance. The television coverage starts at 10pm where I live in Sydney, Australia. It is winter, and very cold outside. So, for 21 days, four hours every night, I enjoy the waves of heat and excitement live from the other side of the world!
So I paint as I watch! I paint scenes from Le Tour very quickly with watercolour on paper. This spontaneous technique reflects the fleeting views of energy and movement of the riders. Technically, I am influenced by traditional Chinese calligraphy, which inspires me to be loose and gestural with the brush.
And I take photos... My camera captures blurred, un-fussy images that have no detail. They are a fleeting, frozen moments, and can be used as my muse for many months after Le Tour has packed up and gone home.
